Sight Word Egg Hunt

As mentioned in the previous post, we are using America Reading @ Home, a program that provides parents a system to teach their kids to read. Kaylee knows a good amount of words, we don't have an exact count, but Curtis has done a great job in teaching her phonics and how to sound out a word. Now, phonics isn't my strength, so a set of books that are designed to learn sight words (words that are we are suppose know by sight alone, and something Kaylee will be taught in elementary school) is something that I can do.

Today, I read about 4 books from our Y-level. Kaylee picked all animal topics. I asked her if she wanted to try to read, she declined. No biggie, I'll just read the book. I figured she'd see how easy it was and she'd join in. Afterwards, she wanted to watch something, so I told her to try and read 2 books, then you can watch a show. She read 2 books, no problem. Ok, time for the game to make sure she can actually read the word.  So, while she watched her show (Martha Speaks which is about a dog that can talk and has a vast vocabulary), I set up Sight Word Egg Hunt. I took the 5 power words from the 2 books she read, wrote them on 5 plastic eggs for a total of 25 eggs, hid them, and had a basket for each word for her to put into after finding all the eggs.
When her show was over we had an egg hunt. She read each word correctly when she found it and then sorted them accordingly afterwards.
She knew them: can, see, I, the, you. She also opened an egg to remove the T in "the" and said "he". And I asked what sound does "ee" make, and she said "eeee".

So, I guess day one is a success. I'll continue to do the egg hunt to reinforce the words. I'd like to take credit for the game, but I found it in my never-ending Pinterest pinning. We will continue reading as long as she is interested. I'll find some game to reinforce the words, and we will carry-on from here. As long as it is fun and has the desire to learn I will do my best to provide a supportive environment. But not to worry, we still play. In fact, I played the younger sister all day today, and Kaylee played a very Jesika sounding big sister.
