Reading Readiness Class

We have started Kaylee's reading readiness class. Tuesday was the first class. It was an hour and 15-minutes long. There were about 14 kids in the class. And Kaylee's best bud Austin was in the class with her. We sat in the front in big kid desks (the class is held at a middle school). The parent/guardian sits next to the kids.

Here is Kaylee writing her name on her packet.

The teacher, Ms. Sarah, started the class by teaching the kids to "put on their reading goggles." This got the kids to pay attention. Tuesday's class consisted of rhyming words, listening to Ms. Sarah read a book aloud, and acting out the book. "M" was the letter and sound of the day, so the kids did a workbook page for the letter "M". Kaylee had to circle things that started with the letter "M", and then there was class participation to make a list of all the "M" items. Kaylee did great and participated in everything. At times Kaylee would forget what word she was going to say, so she'd turn to me for assistance.

So, the class content is review for Kaylee. She knows her letters, sounds, and is getting very good at writing her capital letters. We can definitely work on her rhyming. But the best part of this class is introducing Kaylee to structure, classroom rules, listening to the teacher, class participation, etc. We have "homework". Our homework to read a book, do a workbook page and listen to the accompanying CD track, and either do a rhyming game or act out the book we read.  And do this 4x before our next class. So, off to do some homework!
