So how did we prepare for this big milestone? Well we purchased 2 potty chairs (one upstairs and one for downstairs) and a few books on the big event several months ago. And for several months we've been talking about it, and how everyone does it. I would say Mommy uses the toilet, Daddy uses the toilet, and continue naming everyone she knows. Same thing with a BM, or poop as she calls it. She would often say, "Poop stinky!", and I would tell her that everyone's poop is stinky, and go down the list of names. (Yep, your poop does stink!). Then I started to ask her where she is suppose to pee and poop, and she would reply toilet. And I also started to tell her that soon we were going to be all done with diapers and she would be able to wear underwear. So her brain knew what the process was suppose to be like, meaning she knew the right answers. But this skill truly requires hands on practice. She needed to connect the action of peeing to a consequence or outcome because the diaper does such a great job at absorbing her output. She didn't have that connection to the action and how it felt (that is how I see it).
I never had a set date on when to potty training. Initially I was thinking of going cold-turkey, just doing away with all diaper usage. I was hesitant to start because there was always something coming up. I suppose it was Kaylee that decided for me, when she insisted on that diaper I knew if I didn't act soon it could have been a much more difficult process. So today my process is to prompt her often of where her toilet is, and to reminder her to let us know when she needs to go potty. Of course the process of toilet training is far from over, but I am, we are, very proud of how far along she has come in 4 days.
